Terrain

Milos is one of the richest islands in caves and minerals. That was the main reason people lived on it since the beginning of human civilization and used minerals like obsidian for tools and crafts. They could trade them for other objects or currency and boosted their economy.

Till today a big part of the economy is based on its underground, so there have been many mines built on the island. Some of them have closed down, leaving beautiful sceneries behind, while others are still functioning.

One of the first civilizations in the world was built here at 3000 BC and developed due to the superior location for commerce. To this day the remains of this village are there and a museum is built around it.

While history continued civilizations progressed and this theater was built by the Romans when they conquered ancient Greece.It was used by them for plays and entertainment while having a majestic view of the sea. The theater was recently renewed and a lot of plays and concerts are being held every year at Milos festival.

History

Then when Christianity was still illegal and Christians had nowhere to pray or bury their loved ones, the locals mined these catacombs. It was a secret place which was only known by the Christians of that time and it provided them shelter for many years. It is the second biggest catacomb after the one in Rome and it is now open to visitors every day.

During big wars in the modern days Milos had a very special location so many great powers wanted to use it. That lead Germans, when they conquered the island, into making long underground tunnels for shelter. Today these tunnels are used for presentations and galleries every year.

Milos has over 70 different beaches with all kinds of terrains and for all tastes.

Traditions

Milos has a very tasteful and unique cuisine. All of the seafood is local and fresh while there is also local feta and mizithra cheese. You can find plenty of taverns that serve traditional dishes which are really unforgettable.

During the summer there are uncountable events and celebrations which are being held at churches or local squares. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn traditional dances, eat local food and have fun for the whole night.

There are events that you won’t see nowhere else like the 31 of August when people jump above fires.
